Achieving Eternal Elegance

On a recent trip to Paris, I brought these fashion postcards. I love the fashions of yesteryear as well as the elegance, charisma and style of each photo’s subjects (regardless of the decade they were photographed in). While considering their ‘jena se qua’ or something special you cannot quite place, I started thinking of elegance – what it is, who has it and how to achieve it?

Elegance never goes out of style. Yet natural elegance is difficult to emulate. It is innate. What makes someone elegant? Is it their clothes, style, behaviour? Maybe it is how they hold themselves and their self-belief? Icons of poise and sophistication – Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy, to name but a few – ticked all of those boxes. And their elegance is timeless – continuing to inspire and delight today. After consideration, my prerequisites of elegance are:

>> Authentic to oneself
>> Confident, positive and happy
>> A beautiful smile
>> Graceful with prefect posture
>> Gracious, polite and kind
>> Always clean, neat and fresh
>> Style – always choosing fashion that looks best on them
>> Wearing clothes of the highest quality available to them
>> Making an effort to look their best whatever the occasion
>> Fragrance, make-up, hair and accessories are an extension of their style
>> Sets an example in fashion, etiquette and sophistication
>> Is completely unique

What is elegance to you? Who do you consider to be elegant? xx

Editor’s Letter

Editor’s Letter

The week that was…

In this week’s letter from the editor, I have two bits of exciting news!

One… Uptown Twirl and I were featured in the Gold Coast Bulletin, an Australian newspaper publication. I was so excited and flattered to be featured and I have included a link below to read the article on the Uptown Twirl Facebook page. Click here to read the article…x

Two… I thought I would tell you a little bit about me – the girl behind Uptown Twirl…

Q&A’s with me…

I think my best quality is…
Being Kind… I try to be nice to everyone.

My worst Quality would be…
Impatience or indecisiveness… I really just can’t decide.

My best feature…
My smile. I smile a lot :)

Favourite Fashion Designers…
Chanel is my all time favourite. Attending a Chanel show would be a dream come true and when it happens I will most likely cry… a lot! Some of my other favourites include: Chloé, Dior, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Burberry and YSL. But there are so many more!

My Style icons…
Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Diane Kruger and Zooey Deschanel.

My fashion style…
I would say my style is feminine, colourful and I try to choose classic pieces. I love 60’s style, so 60’s shift dresses, coloured tights and mary-jane heels make up a large part of my wardrobe.

Top Of My Autumn Wish List…
Love the Louis Vuitton 50’s inspired wasp waist circle skirts!

First Fashion Memory…
My Nanna loved sewing and I think that is where my love of fashion came from originally. Seeing clothes being made from scratch right in front of me I found very intriguing. When I eventually learned to sew I was obsessed with fashion!

Favourite City…
Paris! I have been many times and still cannot speak French! It is one of my goals to learn.

Favourite Websites…
Love Net-A-Porter for admiring potential purchases; Style.com for fashion week coverage and collections; Vogue.co.uk for all round fashion news, events and photos.

I am happiest when…
I am spending time with my husband James, eating great food, travelling and discovering more about fashion (i.e. shopping!)

I relax by…
Shopping! I live right near Hampstead and love shopping on Haverstock Hill!

My last supper would be…
Pancakes and maple syrup with ice cream.

My addictions would be…
Fashion, buying fashion magazines (Vogue & Elle a must!), cupcakes and working on Uptown Twirl.

So that’s a little bit about me. But I would love to hear about you! Let me know your obsessions, must-have fall pieces and favourite things…xx

Jessica Alba’s Evolving Style

Photos from twenty2.onsugar.com and style.com

This year Jessica Alba has been dressing to impress. With an evolving style that includes a taste for the major fashion houses – from Chanel to Dior, Balmain, Valentino and Dolce and Gabbana – Alba is set to fast become a style icon.

So… this week we celebrate the emerging fashion style of Jessica Alba!

Making a name for herself in the fashion world, Alba is regularly topping the best dressed lists. With many of her looks taken straight from the catwalk, Alba’s effortless carefree glamour makes for the perfect accompaniment to the striking pieces. Choosing show stopping dresses to flatter Alba’s incredible body, I think Jessica Alba’s stylist may be in need of a raise…

Alba’s relaxed weekend look, red-carpet glamour and carefree elegance – always has her looking ultra chic and making quite the style statement.

My Favourite Jessica Alba look:
Dolce and Gabbana, Fall 2010 Collection

Tailoring, sex appeal, lace and lingerie are what Dolce and Gabbana are known for. Always creating immaculately tailored pieces that fit and flatter a woman’s curves – they know women and how to dress them. Elegant yet undeniably sexy, the Dolce and Gabbana dress (pictured top) was one of my favourite looks from the Fall 2010 collection. The seductive floral print with lots of sheer layers is refined, chic and sexy. Love the long sheer sleeves and unfinished hemline. Bellissimo!

What do you think of Jessica Alba’s style? Who are your style favourites? xx
