Love, Love, Love… Natalia Vodianova

Model, Actress, Designer, Wife & Mother, Philanthropist… Natalia Vodianova is one extraordinary lady.

About Natalia Vodianova…

Born in Gorky, USSR, Natalia Vodianova grew up in a poor district of the city. As a teenager, Vodianova would help her mother sell fruit on the street and later set up her own fruit stand to help her family out of poverty. At the age of 15, Vodianova enrolled in a modelling academy. She was told she would need to learn English to succeed in the business. Vodianova mastered the language within just 3months and by the age of 17 had already moved to Paris and signed with Viva Models.

Career…

Vodianova has walked in over 175 runway shows and appeared in countless editorial spreads for fashion magazines worldwide. She has covered, on numerous occasions, Vanity Fair, Vogue, i-D, W, Italian Vogue, British Vogue, Pop, and Tatler, amongst others. This month alone, she graces two covers! Vodianova has been the ‘face’ of many campaigns, including those for; Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Diana Von Fürstenberg, L’Oréal and others. As part of her contract with Etam (the French lingerie label), Vodianova has also designed a lingerie collection each season, under the brand Natalia pour Etam.

Outside Of Modelling…

Vodianova has three children with husband Justin Portman, and has been recognized for her philanthropic contributions. She is a founder and the president of the Naked Heart Foundation, a organisation that strives to provide a safe and inspiring environment for every child living in urban Russia to play in. In November 2010, Vodianova was awarded the Harper’s Bazaar Inspiration of the Year.

Vodianova will soon appear on the silver screen starring opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the romance Belle du Seigneur. Of taking on the role of actress, Vodianova has said: “Acting is an extension of what I do as a model because I never just pose. I always give a bit more.”

Reese Witherspoon’s US Vogue Controversy

Reese Witherspoon graces the May 2011 Vogue US cover and her feature interview has caused a little controversy online. When interviewer Jonathan Van Meter began asking Witherspoon questions about fashion, it is reported she quickly finished his sentence and her tiny comment hasn’t made some of the fashion pack very happy. Van Meter began “People who love fashion often …”, before Witherspoon finished “Lack perspective?” – with apparently a “comically judgmental look on her face”.

Her photo editorial for this issue is spectacular though. Wearing divine gowns by Dior, Narciso Rodriguez, Dolce & Gabbana and more; I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Old-Hollywood glamour and whimsical magic of the shoot! Simply Darling!

Christian Louboutin Sues For Use Of Red Soles

Last week Christian Louboutin filed a lawsuit against Yves Saint Laurent for a pair of YSL red pumps with red soles (pictured far right).  The red suede shoes with matching red soles are apart of the Spring / Summer 2011 collection which also features other coloured soles. Purple shoes with purple soles,  navy shoes with navy soles and so on.

In an official statement for Carmen Steffens this week it was said, “We are ready to provide unassailable evidence that we have been using coloured soles, especially red, before Mr Christian Louboutin popularised his.”. Watch this space…

Miu Miu’s Spring / Summer 2011 Ad Cleared

The UK Advertising Standard Authority (ASA) has investigated whether the latest Miu Miu campaign is ‘responsible’ to be shown. The campaign starring Kasia Struss, was placed in question for Struss’ slim frame. Two people had complained about the ad citing that the model was “significantly underweight”.

In its official verdict the ASA reported “We considered that the ad was typical of those used for fashion products and that the model did not look significantly underweight. We therefore concluded that the ad was not irresponsible.”

Christophe Decarnin Leaves Balmain

Luxury French fashion house, Balmain, announced Christophe Decarnin has stepped down as Creative Director. It is believed Decarnin’s successor will most likely be someone from within the current design team. Decarnin had been absent from Balmain’s Autumn / Winter 2011 collection show, amid rumours he was in a mental hospital. From the Balmain official statement:

“Balmain’s success in the Decarnin years was based on a relatively simple formula of impeccably tailored jackets, tough pants, T-shirts and sexy beaded dresses — all for staggering sums — and Mr Decarnin may have felt stuck in recent months about his direction. Designers are indeed under a lot of pressure, some of it self-imposed, to create relevant collections. Shy and introverted, with a label that had its admirers and critics, Mr Decarnin may have been more vulnerable than others to that pressure.”
