Pretty In Pink

A Pink Lady Pledge

Model of the moment, Charlotte Free, isn’t afraid to stand out from the crowd. Her striking pink locks have walked in a number of runway shows both in London and New York for high profile labels – from Marchesa to Vivienne Westwood.

What is quite unexpectedly startling though is how seemingly transitional pink hair can be. Looking at the selection of catwalk images from the Spring / Summer 2012 runways, Free’s statement tresses embrace whatever the styling direction of the label. Whether channelling ‘fresh, polished sophistication’ at Marchesa; ‘edgy grunge’ at Kinder Aggugini; or ‘sexy 60’s Lolita’ at Jeremy Scott – Free looks quite simply divine.

Having previously opened Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label show; for Spring / Summer 2012 Free has already walked for Roksanda Ilincic, Topshop Unique, Jeremy Scott, PPQ, Kinder Aggugini, Vivienne Westwood and Louise Gray, amongst others.

Originally dying her own hair, using an assortment of shades – sweetly called ‘Virgin Rose’, ‘Cupcake Pink’, ‘Hot Hot Pink’ and ‘Cotton Candy’ – Free now leaves her daring pink tresses to the professionals.

Pink hair = fearless beauty. Would you take the plunge? xx

Betsey Johnson

The Betsey Johnson label is all about attitude and for Spring / Summer 2012, the iconic New York designer celebrated the female form with a fresh vitality and insatiable appetite for all things youthful, fun and sexy.

Taking her inspiration from burlesque and legendary bombshell Brigitte Bardot, the collection was anchored around sexy, lingerie-inspired ensembles – perfect to embrace and flaunt your curves in.

Pieces were slightly sheer, flirty and playful. Bra straps went peak-a-boo under pretty party dresses; while hemlines went from racy thigh-high to floor length. Johnson’s signature prom dress also appeared – worn strapless with a sweetheart neckline and frothy skirt. Each look struck the perfect balance between fitted and loose. Tops fell off the shoulder; lace-up corsets clinched in the waist; chic leather jackets in hot pink, black and white were trimmed with ruffles.

Yet it was the accessories that further amped up the volume and took the collection into overdrive. Fingerless gloves, lightning bolt earrings and chunky statement necklaces combined for a mesmerising runway presentation. Not to mention the pert hats accentuated with flowers, sheer knee high socks worn with sky-high heels and that unmistakable bombshell hair.

When Johnson did take to the stage, she performed her signature cartwheel and landed in a split with her arms raised boldly in the air. Another epic runway collection unlike any other…

Ralph Lauren

Inspired by ‘The Great Gatsby’, Ralph Lauren’s Spring / Summer 2012 collection is a positively enchanting take of 1920’s dressing.

My favourite look from the runway…  With gorgeous long stand necklaces, a divine cloche hat, a beautiful floral day dress; Ralph Lauren’s collection is an exquisite vision of jazz age finesse.

Ralph Lauren Spring / Summer 2012

Delightfully embellished silver flapper dresses; delicate floral prints; embroidered, fringed handbags; Ralph Lauren created a presentation of simply divine day & evening wear that sparkled with luxe, alluring beauty.

Originally designing the costumes for the 1974 film ‘The Great Gatsby’, Lauren revisited the roaring twenties for Summer; while the remake, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, is currently being filmed. The result is a timely, fresh perspective on the decade; bringing elements of masculine and feminine, soft and structured, simplicity yet decadence into the spotlight.

Cashmere sweaters were turned ‘vintage’ with faux moth holes. Delicate silk scarves were tied tightly around model’s necks. Pinstriped three piece suits appeared strategically placed amongst a collection which also featured gorgeous feathers and dizzyingly beautiful embellished gowns…
